Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, ICI Director, Media Relations: In today’s asset management industry, you can’t just understand the present, you have to see into the future. And that’s exactly what’s on the agenda at this year’s General Membership Meeting. ICI GMM Chair Tom Faust shared with me, at his Boston headquarters for Eaton Vance, some insights on the forward-thinking, innovative agenda that’s on tap.
Tom Faust, ICI GMM Chairman and Eaton Vance Chairman and CEO: Our industry is in the midst of profound change today in terms of customer appetite for different types of products, whether an exchange-traded product or whether a mutual fund in its traditional form, active versus passive, different variations of that, the different role of financial advisers, the different types of fund distribution. All those things are playing out in real time. And our goal and our challenge in putting together this year’s program was to try to bring that together.
Ortbals-Tibbs: One of the things that’s so impressive and interesting about this year’s programming is that it’s not just giving people information about key industry trends, it’s also offering them a chance to think in a completely different way about certain issues, with some insights from one of the world’s best-known, best-selling authors and journalists.
Faust: Walter Isaacson is one of the leading observers in changes that have happened in recent years in the world of technology and media. Walter will be interviewed by Ted Truscott during one of our lunch sessions, which I think will be a fascinating opportunity for us to hear, not only how things have developed and how things have changed in those industries, but also what the applications are, potentially, to our own industry.
