Pre-Conference Event: Core Responsibilities of Fund Directors

At this popular preconference session, you’ll hear expert panelists review the core responsibilities of fund directors—and explore practices for fulfilling them. This session caters to directors (both independent and interested) of all levels of experience. Newer directors will want to join to build their knowledge; veteran directors will want to come for the refresher. It is a perfect complement to IDC’s new orientation program—Foundations for Fund Directors®.

The Trials of Constance Baker Motley, a Film Screening and Conversation with Joel Motley

With archival footage and narration in her own voice, "The Trials of Constance Baker Motley" tells the story of an influential civil rights leader whose remarkable life and legacy lives on and impacts us as business leaders today.

Constance Baker Motley was a central figure in the civil rights movement during the 1950's and 1960's. Judge Motley was the first African American woman lawyer to argue a case before the Supreme Court, the first African American woman in the New York State Senate, the first African American woman borough president of Manhattan, and the first African American woman to be nominated to the federal bench. Earlier in her career, she was a civil rights lawyer working with Thurgood Marshall to challenge segregation laws, and played a significant role in the landmark case, Brown vs. Board of Education.

Following the documentary screening, independent director Joel Motley will be interviewed about the life and legacy of his mother, and offer observations about how lessons from her leadership are relevant to effective governance today.
