Worldwide Regulated Open-End Fund Assets and Flows
Fourth Quarter 2022

Washington, DC; March 22, 2023—Worldwide regulated open-end fund assets increased 7.1 percent to $60.15 trillion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022, excluding funds of funds. Worldwide net cash inflow to all funds was $123 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with $39 billion of net outflows in the third quarter of 2022.

The Investment Company Institute compiles worldwide regulated open-end fund statistics on behalf of the International Investment Funds Association (IIFA), the organization of national fund associations. The collection for the fourth quarter of 2022 contains statistics from 46 jurisdictions.

The growth rate of total regulated open-end fund assets reported in US dollars was increased by US dollar depreciation over the fourth quarter of 2022. For example, on a US dollar–denominated basis, fund assets in Europe increased by 10.4 percent in the fourth quarter, compared with an increase of 0.9 percent on a euro-denominated basis.

On a US dollar–denominated basis, equity fund assets increased by 8.8 percent to $26.95 trillion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022. Bond fund assets increased by 2.6 percent to $11.55 trillion in the fourth quarter. Balanced/mixed fund assets increased by 7.7 percent to $7.09 trillion in the fourth quarter, while money market fund assets increased by 6.7 percent globally to $8.86 trillion.

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2022, 45 percent of worldwide regulated open-end fund assets were held in equity funds. The asset share of bond funds was 19 percent and the asset share of balanced/mixed funds was 12 percent. Money market fund assets represented 15 percent of the worldwide total.

By region, 53 percent of worldwide assets were in the Americas in the fourth quarter of 2022, 32 percent were in Europe, and 15 percent were in Africa and the Asia-Pacific regions.

Net sales of regulated open-end funds worldwide were $123 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022. Flows out of equity funds worldwide were $53 billion in the fourth quarter, after experiencing $79 billion of net outflows in the third quarter of 2022.

Globally, bond funds posted an outflow of $125 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, after recording an inflow of $42 billion in the third quarter.

Outflows from balanced/mixed funds worldwide totaled $46 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, compared with $47 billion of outflows in the third quarter of 2022.

Money market funds worldwide experienced an inflow of $332 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022 after registering an inflow of $17 billion in the third quarter of 2022.
