ETF Assets and Net Issuance
January 2023
Washington, DC, February 27, 2023—The combined assets of the nation’s exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were $6.92 trillion in January, according to ICI. The Institute’s monthly statistical collection also includes the value of shares issued and redeemed by exchange-traded funds.
Statistics contained in the Institute’s monthly ETF report have been obtained from information provided to ICI by exchange-traded funds and commodity funds. Commodity funds are listed in the Domestic (Sector/Industry) category.

Highlights: Assets of all exchange-traded funds rose in January by $447.16 billion, or 6.9 percent, to $6.92 trillion. Over the past 12 months, ETF assets increased $38.34 billion, or 0.6 percent. Assets in domestic equity ETFs decreased $53.07 billion since January 2022, and global equity ETF assets fell $19.30 billion during this period. At the end of January 2023, assets of bond funds were $1.32 trillion and hybrid funds were $33.17 billion and commodity funds were $141.92 billion.
During January, the value of all ETF shares issued exceeded that of shares redeemed by $45.55 billion. In January 2022, the value of all ETF shares issued exceeded that of shares redeemed by $32.08 billion.
