Active and Index Combined Long-Term Mutual Funds and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs): May 2026

Washington, DC; June 30, 2026—The combined assets of the nation’s active mutual funds and ETFs increased by $556.06 billion, or 3.1 percent, to $18.75 trillion in May while the combined assets of the nation’s indexed mutual funds and ETFs increased by $1.00 trillion, or 4.8 percent, to $21.82 trillion in May according to the Investment Company Institute’s official survey of the mutual fund and ETF industry.

Highlights: Long-term active funds—equity, hybrid, and bond funds—had a net inflow of $11.08 billion in May versus an outflow of $21.23 billion in April, while long-term index funds had a net inflow of $96.47 billion in May versus an inflow of $123.31 billion in April.

Active funds
Equity funds posted an outflow of $31.98 billion in May, compared with an outflow of $36.26 billion in April. Among equity funds, world equity funds (U.S. funds that invest primarily overseas) posted an outflow of $4.95 billion in May, versus an outflow of $40 million in April. Funds that invest primarily in the United States had an outflow of $27.03 billion in May, versus an outflow of $36.22 billion in April.

Hybrid funds posted an outflow of $2.76 billion in May, compared with an outflow of $4.17 billion in April.

Bond funds had an inflow of $45.82 billion in May, compared with an inflow of $19.20 billion in April.

Index funds
Equity funds posted an inflow of $35.41 billion in May, compared with an inflow of $97.22 billion in April. Among equity funds, world equity funds (U.S. funds that invest primarily overseas) posted an inflow of $2.21 billion in May, versus an inflow of $23.53 billion in April. Funds that invest primarily in the United States had an inflow of $33.21 billion in May, versus an inflow of $73.69 billion in April.

Hybrid funds posted an outflow of $428 million in May, compared with an outflow of $463 million in April.

Bond funds had an inflow of $61.48 billion in May, compared with an inflow of $26.56 billion in April.
