Closed-End Fund Assets and Net Issuance

Washington, DC, August 19, 2021—The combined assets of the nation’s closed-end funds were $305.19 billion at the end of June 2021 according to ICI. The Institute’s quarterly statistical collection also includes the value of shares issued and redeemed by closed-end funds.

Highlights: Total closed-end fund assets increased $11.70 billion during the second quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $7.72 billion to $122.71 billion, and bond fund assets increased by $3.98 billion to $182.48 billion. 

For the quarter, closed-end funds had net issuance of $2.89 billion, compared with net issuance of $6.75 billion in the first quarter of 2021.

There were 470 closed-end funds at the end of the second quarter. Bond funds numbered 296, and equity funds totaled 174. There were 494 closed-end funds at year-end 2020.
