Washington, DC, March 4, 2025 — The combined assets of all Section 529 plans—“qualified tuition programs” designed to help save for higher education expenses—were $602.9 billion at the end of December 2025, an increase of 14.82 percent since year-end 2024. At the end of December 2025, savings plans held $576.7 billion, while prepaid plans accounted for another $26.2 billion.

Number of Section 529 Plan Accounts
The number of Section 529 plan accounts was 17.7 million at the end of December 2025, an increase of 4.29 percent since year-end 2024. There were 16.9 million savings plan accounts and 0.8 million prepaid plan accounts at the end of December 2025.
