Washington, DC, November 14, 2024 — The combined assets of all Section 529 plans—“qualified tuition programs” designed to help save for higher education expenses—were $508.3 billion at the end of June 2024, an increase of 7.87 percent since year-end 2023. At the end of June 2024, savings plans held $483.7 billion, while prepaid plans accounted for another $24.6 billion.

Number of Section 529 Plan Accounts
The number of Section 529 plan accounts was 16.8 million at the end of June 2024, an increase of 2.12 percent since year-end 2023. There were 15.9 million savings plan accounts and 0.9 million prepaid plan accounts at the end of June 2024.
