ICI Education Foundation Awards Grant to the Maryland Council on Economic Education

Grant to fund new teacher training on investor education and personal finance

Washington, DC; May 20, 2020—The Investment Company Institute Education Foundation (ICIEF) has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Maryland Council on Economic Education (MCEE) to help further the financial education of secondary school teachers in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

The grant will fund MCEE’s creation of a weeklong, intensive program for 12 to 15 teachers, including in-depth lessons on investor education, personal finance, and teaching strategies. Through the training, which will take place during the summer of 2020—either in-person or virtually, depending on the COVID-19 crisis—teachers will build a strong foundation in personal finance and will learn skills and strategies to apply the lessons to their own lives and to their students’ coursework on saving and investing.

“We are very proud to present MCEE with a grant to continue their work educating Maryland teachers on the important topic of financial literacy,” said Investment Company Institute (ICI) President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens, who is also a member of the ICIEF board. “This grant is an opportunity to invest in our educators, equipping them to apply what they learn in this course to their students and to their own personal finances.”

“This intensive teacher training embodies the spirit of ICIEF’s mission and our commitment to promoting investor education in the Washington metropolitan area,” added Tina Kilroy, ICIEF vice president. “We look forward to partnering with MCEE to create and implement the program.”

“We’re thrilled to accept this grant from ICIEF, which will allow MCEE to continue providing Maryland educators with the professional development they need to succeed in building their students’ financial knowledge,” said Julie Weaver, MCEE executive director. “This innovative course will empower Maryland teachers to reach thousands of students throughout their careers.”

For more than 70 years, MCEE has worked to enhance economic and financial literacy by providing teacher training, instructional materials, and curriculum consultation to Maryland’s schools. The organization aims to provide students with the knowledge they need to be informed savers and investors.

ICIEF is the educational affiliate of ICI and partners with schools, government agencies, and other nonprofit organizations to develop, deliver, and promote investment education programs. Visit the organizations’ websites for more information about MCEE and about ICIEF.
