Data is central to the work we do in ICI Research. We collect it from our members, download it from government websites, and purchase it from third-party vendors. We clean it, analyze it, and tabulate it. And then, we put it into research reports, blog posts, regulatory comment letters, statistical releases, and of course, our annual Fact Book.

ICI has published Fact Book for 65 years to promote better public understanding of investment companies. Early on, we added data tables to the back of the book for the committed and the curious. That section continued to grow through the decades, and we now publish 69 data tables on icifactbook.org covering assets, flows, number of funds, and more for mutual funds, ETFs, CEFs, and UITs in the United States and for regulated open-end funds worldwide.

Today, we're excited to launch our next step—a new charting option for Fact Book. For each one of our data tables, you can choose to view an interactive chart or download an Excel file with the underlying data. Choose the table, the data series, and the date range you want to see. Hover your mouse over the chart to see the data values. Or, if you want to take the chart with you, download an image with exactly the data you have selected (for example, Table 63).

So try it out for yourself. Not sure where to start? Here’s the table each of ICI’s top economists said was their pick for the most compelling view of ICI’s data.

Shelly Antoniewicz, Chief Economist—Prime money market funds have experienced a lot of attention over the years, and Table 41 allows us to see how various rulemakings or crises have affected the securities they hold.

Sarah Holden, Senior Director, Retirement and Investor Research—Table 56 allows us to keep an eye on target date funds, which are a popular 401(k) plan participant investment and key to these retirement savers' success.

Shane Worner, Senior Director, Industry and Financial Analysis—Table 67 documents the worldwide fund market, shedding light on the size of the fund markets by geographical area.

Judy Steenstra, Senior Director, Statistical Research—Table 42 because you can see the growth of index investing though mutual funds, and you can also see how much money is still invested in funds using active investing.

Peter Brady, Senior Economic Adviser—Tables 63 and 64 show the importance of mutual funds to retirement investing.

Christof Stahel, Senior Economic Adviser—Table 21 shows off ICI's exceptional flow data and allows people to drill down into the flows of different fund categories.

Hammad Qureshi, Senior Economic Adviser—So much of the investing action these days is in ETFs, and Table 13 puts into context the record inflows into ETFs in 2024.
