Washington, DC, April 18, 2002 - Unit investment trusts, investment companies that hold fixed portfolios of selected stocks or bonds, had deposits of $912.4 million in December 2001. For comparison, deposits were a revised $965.1 million in November 2001 and $2.16 billion in December 2000, according to statistics compiled by the Investment Company Institute.

Deposits to equity trusts totaled $758.1 million in December 2001, compared with a revised $764.2 million in November 2001 and $2.11 billion in December 2000. Tax-free bond trusts recorded deposits of $103.8 million in December 2001, compared with a revised $141.5 million in November 2001 and $36.3 million in December 2000. Deposits in December 2001 in taxable bond trusts reached $50.5 million, compared with a revised $59.5 million in November 2001 and $16.8 million in December 2000.

There were 52 new trusts issuing shares in December 2001. Of that, 26 were new tax-free bond trusts, 24 new equity trusts, and two new taxable bond trusts.

In terms of maturity, long-term bond trusts having an average weighted maturity of more than 15 years were the most commonly offered in December 2001, with $125.2 million in shareholder deposits.
