Washington, DC, January 17, 2002 - Unit investment trusts, investment companies that purchase fixed portfolios of selected stocks or bonds, increased their deposits through offerings in November 2001 of $991.0 million. That compares with $1.82 billion in November 2000, according to statistics compiled by the Investment Company Institute.

Deposits to equity trusts totaled $790.1 million in November 2001, compared with $1.74 billion in November 2000. Tax-free bond trusts issued shares in November 2001 with deposits of $141.5 million compared with $56.5 million in November 2000. Shares issued in November 2001 by taxable bond trusts reached $59.5 million compared with $18.2 million in November 2000.

There were 30 new tax-free bond trusts issuing shares in November 2001, three new taxable bond trusts, and 34 new equity trusts.

In terms of maturity, long-term bond trusts having an average weighted maturity of more than 15 years were the most commonly offered in November 2001, with $168.5 million in shareholder deposits.
