Unit Investment Trust Data

Washington, DC, July 12, 2002 - Unit investment trusts, investment companies that hold fixed portfolios of selected stocks or bonds, had total deposits of $957.9 million in May 2002, according to statistics compiled by the Investment Company Institute. For comparison, deposits were $872.1 million in April 2002 and $1.52 billion in May 2001.

There were 55 new trusts issuing shares in May 2002. Of which, 37 were new equity trusts, 15 tax-free bond trusts, and three new taxable bond trusts.

In terms of maturity, long-term bond trusts having an average weighted maturity of more than 15 years were the most commonly offered in May 2002, with $128.8 million in shareholder deposits.
