Institute staff collect, compile, verify for accuracy, and release a wide range of statistics on U.S.-registered mutual funds. The Institute also collects data on U.S.-based closed-end funds, exchange-traded funds, and unit investment trusts, as well as foreign open-end investment companies in conjunction with investment company industry associations around the world.
The impetus for ICI's data collection efforts began in the summer of 1940, following the enactment of the Investment Company Act, when investment company leaders first formed a committee to monitor industry progress and trends.
A good overview of ICI statistics and research on mutual funds and other investment companies through the most recent year-end is the Mutual Fund Fact Book.
