Exchange-Traded Fund Assets
December 2007Washington, DC, January 30, 2008 - The combined assets of the nation's exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were $608.42 billion in December, according to ICI. The Institute's monthly statistical collection also includes the value of shares issued and redeemed by exchange-traded funds. Statistics contained in the Institute's monthly ETF report have been obtained from information provided to ICI by exchange-traded funds and commodity funds. Commodity funds are listed in the Domestic (Sector/Industry) category. A detailed breakdown of the monthly ETF data is available on our website at http://members.ici.org/stats/etfdata.xls

Highlights: Assets of all exchange-traded funds rose in December by $36.30 billion, or 6.3 percent, to $608.42 billion. Over the past 12 months, ETF assets increased $185.87 billion, or 44.0 percent. Assets in domestic equity ETFs increased $103.11 billion since December 2006, and global equity ETFs assets rose $68.51 billion during this period. Assets of bond index funds were $34.65 billion and hybrid index funds were $119 million. During December, the value of all ETF shares issued exceeded that of shares redeemed by $44.52 billion. So far this year, ETFs experienced a net issuance of $150.66 billion.
