Closed-End Fund Assets, Fourth Quarter 2007

Washington, DC, February 25, 2008 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $314.94 billion at the end of December 2007, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets decreased $10.61 billion during the fourth quarter. Equity fund assets decreased by $6.73 billion to $146.89 billion, and bond fund assets decreased by $3.88 billion to $168.05 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $1.02 billion, compared with $5.81 billion in the third quarter. There were 668 closed-end funds at the end of the fourth quarter. Bond funds numbered 436, and equity funds totaled 232. There were 647 closed-end funds at year-end 2006.
