Closed-End Fund Assets, Fourth Quarter 2005

Washington, DC, February 28, 2006 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $276.35 billion as of year-end 2005, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $407 million during the fourth quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $1.85 billion to $104.62 billion, and bond fund assets decreased by $1.45 billion to $171.73 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $1.88 billion, compared with $4.85 billion in the third quarter. There were 634 closed-end funds at the end of the quarter. Bond funds numbered 443, and equity funds totaled 191. There were 619 closed-end funds at year-end 2004.
