Closed-End Fund Assets, Third Quarter 2006

Washington, DC, December 4, 2006 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $285.82 billion at the end of September 2006, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $5.65 billion during the third quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $3.47 billion to $110.42 billion, and bond fund assets increased by $2.19 billion to $175.39 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $1.02 billion, compared with $2.51 billion in the second quarter. There were 640 closed-end funds at the end of the quarter. Bond funds numbered 444, and equity funds totaled 196. There were 633 closed-end funds at year-end 2005.
