Closed-End Fund Assets, Third Quarter 2005

Washington, DC, December 20, 2005 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $276.98 billion as of the end of September 2005, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $7.26 billion during the third quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $8.27 billion to $103.52 billion, and bond fund assets decreased by $1.01 billion to $173.45 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $5.83 billion, compared with $5.27 billion in the second quarter. There were 646 closed-end funds at the end of the quarter. Bond funds numbered 457, and equity funds totaled 189. There were 619 closed-end funds at year-end 2004.
