Closed-End Fund Assets, Second Quarter 2006

Washington, DC, August 24, 2006 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $280.66 billion at the end of June 2006, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $909 million during the second quarter. Equity fund assets decreased by $1.18 billion to $107.46 billion, and bond fund assets increased by $2.09 billion to $173.21 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $2.31 billion, compared with $1.28 billion in the first quarter. There were 635 closed-end funds at the end of the quarter. Bond funds numbered 443, and equity funds totaled 192. There were 633 closed-end funds at year-end 2005.
