Closed-End Fund Assets, First Quarter 2007

Washington, DC, June 4, 2007 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $312.41 billion at the end of March 2007, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $14.31 billion during the first quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $14.67 billion to $136.70 billion, and bond fund assets decreased by $357 million to $175.71 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $12.89 billion, compared with $7.00 billion in the fourth quarter of 2006. There were 652 closed-end funds at the end of the first quarter. Bond funds numbered 441, and equity funds totaled 211. There were 647 closed-end funds at year-end 2006.
