Closed-End Fund Assets, First Quarter 2006

Washington, DC, June 6, 2006 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $280.81 billion at the end of March 2006, ICI reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $4.48 billion during the first quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $4.32 billion to $109.06 billion, and bond fund assets increased by $158 million to $171.75 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $1.28 billion, compared with $1.88 billion in the fourth quarter. There were 628 closed-end funds at the end of the quarter. Bond funds numbered 439, and equity funds totaled 189. There were 633 closed-end funds at year-end 2005.
