Closed-End Fund Assets, First Quarter 2005

Washington, DC, May 27, 2005 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $259.65 billion at the end of March 2005, the Investment Company Institute reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $5.34 billion during the first quarter. Equity fund assets increased by $5.69 billion to $87.22 billion, and bond fund assets decreased by $355 million to $172.43 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $9.00 billion, compared with $4.89 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004. There were 625 closed-end funds as of March 2005. Bond funds totaled 461, and equity funds totaled 164. There were 619 closed-end funds at year-end 2004.
