Closed-End Fund Assets, Third Quarter 2004

Washington, DC, December 17, 2004 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $241.24 billion at the end of September 2004, the Investment Company Institute reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $8.66 billion during the third quarter, according to the Institute. Equity fund assets increased by $3.68 billion to $72.26 billion, and bond fund assets increased by $4.98 billion to $168.98 billion.

ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $3.14 billion, compared with $6.29 billion in the second quarter of 2004. There were 608 closed-end funds as of the end of the quarter. Bond funds totaled 459, and equity funds totaled 149. There were 586 closed-end funds at year-end 2003, and 545 funds at year-end 2002.
