Closed-End Fund Assets, Third Quarter 2003

Washington, DC, December 1, 2003 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $202.92 billion at the end of September 2003, the Investment Company Institute reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $14.21 billion during the third quarter, according to the Institute. Equity fund assets increased by $5.56 billion to $45.13 billion, and bond fund assets increased by $8.65 billion to $157.79 billion.

The Institute's quarterly statistical collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $13.36 billion, compared with $15.66 billion in the second quarter of 2003. There were 575 closed-end funds as of the end of the third quarter. Bond funds totaled 449, and equity funds totaled 126. There were 545 closed-end funds at year-end 2002, and 493 closed-end funds at year-end 2001.
