Closed-End Fund Assets, Second Quarter 2004

Washington, DC, August 31, 2004 - The combined assets of the nation's closed-end funds were $232.18 billion at the end of June 2004, the Investment Company Institute reported today in a quarterly statistical collection of closed-end funds.

Total closed-end fund assets increased $337 million during the second quarter, according to the Institute. Equity fund assets increased by $2.10 billion to $67.86 billion, and bond fund assets decreased by $1.76 billion to $164.32 billion.

The ICI's data collection also includes the value of new proceeds invested in closed-end funds and the total number of funds. For the quarter, proceeds to closed-end funds were $5.83 billion, compared with a revised $13.55 billion in the first quarter of 2004. There were 604 closed-end funds as of the end of the second quarter. Bond funds totaled 458, and equity funds totaled 146. There were 586 closed-end funds at year-end 2003, and 545 funds at year-end 2002.
