ICI Supports Increased Dialogue Between U.S. and European UnionWashington, DC, November 17, 2004 - The Institute expressed support for a strong transatlantic relationship between the United States and the European Union (EU) in a recent comment letter to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). Background
The Institute's letter to the USTR focuses on ways to enhance the economic relationship between the U.S. and the EU, and suggests that it would be helpful for the U.S. government to work with EU counterparts on policy issues important to U.S. firms. ICI Position
Specifically, ICI recommended that the U.S. government establish a dialogue between the U.S. Treasury Department and the EU Council of Economic Ministers. Regular dialogue and consultation with Council policymakers during the formulation of legislation could enhance the relationship between the U.S. and the EU and deter policy goals with detrimental effects on U.S. firms. The Institute also called for more transparency concerning subject matters discussed between the U.S. and EU, and encouraged meetings among EU, U.S., and private sector representatives to discuss areas of concern.
