Shareholder Decisionmaking

Institute research finds that fund investors take a long-term approach to investing and display an adequate understanding of investment risks. Fund shareholders are not insensitive to long-term declines in stock prices, but their response has been measured and gradual. In response to stock market volatility, for example, mutual fund investors historically have reacted calmly, and a number of Institute studies show fund investors have never responded to sharp market breaks by redeeming shares en masse.
