The IRA Investor Profile

The IRA Investor Profile is an ICI Research series that collects account-level data of more than 10 million individual retirement accounts (IRAs), providing unique, new insights into IRA investor demographics and activities. The series draws from information collected in The IRA Investor Database™—a joint project by ICI and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). The database is designed to shed light on key determinants of IRA contributions, rollover and withdrawal activity, and the types of assets that investors hold in these accounts. The database supplements existing household surveys and IRS tax data about IRA investors and is designed to increase public understanding in this critical area of retirement savings.

The IRA Investor Profile report series will follow a lifecycle approach to investing. Traditional IRA Investors’ Contribution Activity, 2007 and 2008 is the first of five reports. Traditional IRA Investors' Rollover Activity, 2007 and 2008 is the second report. Traditional IRA Investors’ Asset Allocation, 2007 and 2008 is the third report. Traditional IRA Investors’ Withdrawal Activity, 2007 and 2008 is the fourth report. A fifth report will cover Roth IRA investor activity.
