529 Plan Program Statistics, March 2005

Washington, DC, July 1, 2005 - The combined assets of all Section 529 plans, programs designed to help pay for higher education expenses, grew 4.7 percent to $67.7 billion during the first quarter of 2005. At quarter-end 2005, prepaid plans accounted for $12.6 billion, while savings plans held another $55.1billion.

Number of Section 529 Plan Accounts Increases
The number of Section 529 plan accounts increased 4.0 percent to about 7.5 million in the first quarter of 2005. There were 1.9 million prepaid plan accounts and 5.6 million savings plan accounts. The average 529 savings plan account size was about $9,900 in March 2005.
