529 Plan Program Statistics, December 2006

Washington, DC, May 8, 2007- The combined assets of all Section 529 plans, programs designed to help pay for higher education expenses, grew 8.5 percent to $105.7 billion during the fourth quarter of 2006. At the end of December 2006, prepaid plans accounted for $15.6 billion, while savings plans held another $90.1 billion.

Number of Section 529 Plan Accounts Increases
The number of Section 529 plan accounts increased 2.6 percent to about 9.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. There were 2.1 million prepaid plan accounts and 7.2 million savings plan accounts. The average 529 savings plan account size was about $12,500 in December 2006.
