529 Plan Program Statistics, December 2004

Washington, DC, March 24, 2005 - The combined assets of all Section 529 plans, programs designed to help pay for higher education expenses, grew 13.6 percent to $64.7 billion during the fourth quarter of 2004. Prepaid plans accounted for $12.5 billion, while savings plans another $52.2 billion.

Number of Section 529 Plan Accounts Increases
The number of Section 529 plan accounts increased 1.3 percent to about 7.2 million in the fourth quarter. There were 1.8 million prepaid plan accounts and 5.4 million savings plan accounts. The average 529 savings plan account size was about $9,700 in December 2004.
