529 Plan Program Statistics, September 2004

Washington, DC, February 25, 2005 - The combined assets of all Section 529 plans, programs designed to help pay for higher education expenses, grew 4.8 percent to $57.0 billion during the third quarter of 2004. Assets in 529 savings plans accounted for $45.1 billion while prepaid plans held another $11.8 billion.

Number of Section 529 Plan Accounts Increases
The number of 529 plan accounts increased to approximately 7.1 million, an increase of 4.6 percent - during the third quarter of 2004. There were 5.3 million 529 savings plan accounts and 1.8 million prepaid 529 plan accounts. The average 529 savings plan account size was about $8,500 in September 2004.
