Facts on Saving and Investing Campaign Programs for the Schools

What Can You Do?
There's no better place for our next generation of investors to learn about personal finance and investor protection than in school. Here are some ways you can reach out to students-and their teachers-and promote the goals of the Saving and Investing Education Campaign.

Bring the "Stock Market Game" to Schools in Your Area
For the past twenty years, the Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education has sponsored the "Stock Market Game," a ten-week simulation of Wall Street trading that teaches students about our securities markets, the costs and benefits involved in economic decision-making, the sources and uses of capital, and other basic economic concepts. During the 1996-97 academic year, over 650,000 students, guided by approximately 20,000 teachers in all fifty states, participated in the Stock Market Game.

Consider bringing the Stock Market Game to schools in your area. If it is already part of the curriculum, consider expanding its reach. Some states have adapted the Stock Market Game for adults to provide an increased awareness of the financial markets. Elsewhere, local newspapers have conducted the game to reach a larger audience.

Participate in the "National Teach Children to Save Day"
(April 2, 1998)

April 2, 1998, is the second annual "National Teach Children to Save Day." Developed by the American Banking Association (ABA) Education Foundation, on this day bankers all across the country will visit elementary schools to teach students about the importance of saving. In 1997, more than 2,500 bankers made 5,000 presentations to approximately 125,000 students across the U.S.

You can participate by working with bankers in your area to schedule a presentation. If you need help planning your presentation, the ABA Education Foundation can provide you with a resource kit that contains presentation tips, lesson plans, grade-specific activities, budget worksheets, a coloring book, and more. Kits cost $24.50 ($20.00 plus $4.50 in shipping and handling charges).

To learn more about "National Teach Children to Save Day" or order a kit, call the ABA Education Foundation toll-free at (800) 338-0626.

Visit a Classroom
Make arrangements with local schools to visit a classroom to talk with students about the importance of saving and investing wisely. Tell the students about the SEC's campaign and why it is so important. Offer self-protection tips. Share stories from your experiences with investors. Distribute investor education materials, and encourage the students to share those materials with their families.

Host a Career Day
Coordinate with others in the financial industry in your area and host a career day at a local high school. Tell students what you do for a living. Encourage them to consider careers in finance.

Encourage Field Trips
Invite area teachers to bring their students to your organization's office for a field trip. Give them a tour of your facilities.
